Soapstone, or Kisii stone as it is known locally, is quarried near the town of Tabaka in West Kenya. After selecting the right stone for the job, the maker carves out the heart using a machette, adze, and finally a small knife for the detailed work. After it has been sanded smooth it is dyed and an incised design is added.
